Faithful Resistance is a movement made up of the First Church community and friends that is committed to resisting the steps toward authoritarianism going on in our country today. The ultimate goal of this group is to support the NO KINGS goal of nonviolent resistance on a national scale. Growing our numbers is vital.
The Faithful Resistance Steering Team—Brent Coffin, Sarah Higginbotham, David Kidder, Ann McCann, Martha Mueller Cook, Susan Reynolds, and Alex Steinert-Evoy—provide support by hosting resistance events and trainings; providing a forum for sharing ideas, strategies, plans and providing mutual support; facilitating communication among those individuals or groups who want to resist; and offering space to connect and plan for those who wish to focus on specific areas of resistance (e.g. immigration, education, health care).
Make Good Trouble!
Check out these upcoming events where you can show up for democracy…
- POSTCARDING ACTION FOR IMMIGRANT JUSTICE, Sundays, November 9 & 16, Hastings Common at First Church
- Join a postcarding campaign sponsored by the Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) in support of two bills on Beacon Hill:
- Expanding the Safe Communities Act, which would prevent partnerships between local law enforcement and ICE and prohibit local law enforcement from asking about immigration status; and
- Immigrant Legal Defense Act, which would create a funded statewide program to provide free immigration legal defense to immigrants in Massachusetts who are at imminent risk of deportation, especially those held in federal immigration detention.
- Look for the postcarding table in Hastings Common before and after worship this Sunday and next. Postcards will be collected here at church on November 16 and delivered to MIRA to be presented to legislators at the State House by MIRA on November 25.
- COMMUNITY DEFENSE TRAINING: SUPPORTING OUR IMMIGRANT NEIGHBORS, Monday, November 17, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Harvard-Epworth Church, 1555 Mass Ave, Cambridge
- This one-hour event will offer information about the state of ICE in Massachusetts, preparing our own community for safety, knowing your rights, what to do if you see ICE, supporting our immigrant neighbors, and connections to front-line organizations.
- WEDNESDAY WALKOUTS FOR HEALTH, Wednesdays, 5:00 – 5:30 p.m., Galaxy Park, 220 Main St, Cambridge
