Summer Book Reading Group: The Flag, the Cross and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at His Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened by Bill McKibben

  • Date: Tuesday, August 16, 2022
  • Time: 5:00pm6:00pm EDT
  • Location: via Zoom

Let’s meet on Zoom, an hour a week for three weeks to discuss Bill McKibben’s latest book: The Flag, the Cross and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at His Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened.  “In this revelatory memoir, McKibben digs into our history (and his own…) and into the latest scholarship on race and inequality in America, on religion, and on our environmental crisis to explain how we got to this point.” Bill grew up in nearby Lexington and shares provocative stories about characters and experiences that will be familiar to many of us. Through it all, “he finds he is not without hope. And he wonders if any of that trinity of his youth – the flag, the c orgs and the station wagon – could, or should, be reclaimed in the fight for a fairer future.”  As with our earlier summer book group, we’ll read about 60-70 pages a week.  Please feel free to bring a beverage to the call.  All are welcome, even if you can’t attend all three meetings.  Tuesdays  at 5 pm, August 2, 9 and 16. Please email Dan Smith at dsmith@firstchurchcambridge.org to RSVP and get zoom information.
