...We bring our lives, ourselves, our gifts for such a time as this...

Our Campaign Story

First Church in Cambridge recently asked anew what God is calling First Church to do and be—for such a time as this.  Our congregation’s discernment and generosity resulted in the amazing success of our 2016 for such a time as this campaign and is a living testimony not only to our faith in God, but also to the strength of our shared vision. First Church’s response has given us the courage to step out of our comfort zone and take some bold steps toward our shared future.

As we studied, prayed and listened together, a clear vision came into focus. We developed a new ministry plan which builds on our “meeting house” legacy as a center of vitality within the community and purposefully extends our reach. We renewed our commitment to growth in both membership and annual stewardship. Priorities to preserve our historic building, upgrade our facilities, and improve accessibility, hospitality and service to the community have resulted in a number of exciting projects.

Projects Underway

  • Important masonry and preservation work on our current 1872 building, itself a gift from past generations.
  • An expanded kitchen so we can make and break bread together, while feeding and serving the broader community.
  • New and accessible meeting space and a new Hastings Common with open space for receptions, mingling and conversation before and after worship or a concert.
  • An ingeniously designed ramp to the back hallway, allowing access to four new gender inclusive restrooms and a beautiful new meeting room.
  • Re-configured entry landscaping with a more welcoming and accessible path, an enclosed playground and new space for gathering outdoors.
  • A full tithe from all campaign contributions to fund grants that extend our ministry to the broader community.

Giving Thanks for a Generous Community

With the initial response from the congregation coming in around $1.76 million, we feel confident in establishing a total goal of $1.9 million. Together, we can make it happen!

For more than 375 years, First Church in Cambridge has been a meeting house—a gathering place for searchers and seekers, skeptics and believers, dedicated to making the world a better place. First Church has continually transformed itself to provide welcoming spaces and ministries that strengthen our spiritual lives, nurture our community, and serve our neighbors. Our current mission statement continues to call us to be…

Grounded in God, our hope and healing,

Growing in community, with Jesus our center,

Acting in Love, made bold by the Spirit.
